A US-based South Sudanese company, Kuch Universal Limited, is poised to revolutionize agriculture in South Sudan by establishing irrigation schemes along the Jonglei Canal. The company’s innovative plan aims to enhance farming, especially during the dry season, benefiting local farmers and stimulating economic growth.
The company, with its team of investors, has submitted a proposal to the Jonglei State government and is now awaiting approval. Once operational, the irrigation systems will harness the Jonglei Canal as a water reservoir, providing consistent water supply for agriculture in a region often impacted by unpredictable rainfall.
Dhieu Deng Leek, also known as John Dau, one of the founding members of Kuch Universal Limited, shared his vision for the project, emphasizing that local farmers in Jonglei State will be the main beneficiaries of this initiative. The project, which spans areas from Athooc to Twic East, Duk, Ayod, Fangak, Pigi, and Uror County, will focus on irrigating the lands along the Jonglei Canal.
Dau explained that the goal is not only to improve agricultural productivity but also to help control the region’s seasonal flooding. To that end, the company plans to construct a dyke that will regulate floodwaters, creating a more stable environment for farming and improving overall food security in the region.
“The irrigation schemes will be crucial in providing water for farming, particularly during the dry season when water scarcity is a significant challenge. The dyke will further assist in controlling flooding, ensuring the safety and sustainability of the land,” Dau stated.
In addition to its agricultural impact, the project is expected to generate job opportunities, particularly for the youth in Jonglei State, contributing to economic development and community empowerment. The proposal’s approval by the Jonglei State government is eagerly awaited, as it promises to be a transformative project for the region.
Kuch Universal Limited’s initiative marks an exciting step toward improving South Sudan’s agricultural landscape and addressing some of the most pressing challenges faced by farmers in the region. The project’s potential to enhance food security, create jobs, and improve livelihoods is a testament to the company’s commitment to the development of South Sudan’s agricultural sector.
