Juba, April 24, 2025 — South Sudan’s Ministry of Trade and Industry has officially launched the 1st National Trade Forum 2025, a two-day event taking place at the Radisson Blu Hotel in Juba. Under the theme “Understanding Private Sector Challenges and Solutions on Matters that Affect the Business Environment for Sustainable Growth,” the forum brings together government officials, private sector players, and development partners to chart a path toward a more stable and growth-oriented business environment.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, Hon. Atong Kuol Manyang, South Sudan’s National Minister of Trade and Industry, underscored the importance of operating businesses within a strong legal framework. She emphasized that a regulated market is key to fostering economic stability and encouraging investment.
“In order to have a stable market, it is essential for every business to operate under the legal framework,” Minister Atong said. “This ensures that businesses function within their boundaries, complying with regulations and laws that govern them.”
She added that the forum is expected to deliver “clear, actionable recommendations” that will help South Sudan capitalize on opportunities within the country, the East African region, and the broader African continent to achieve long-term economic growth.
“The Ministry of Trade and Industry, alongside all stakeholders, remains committed to creating a conducive business environment that supports small and medium enterprises,” he said.
Also speaking at the forum, Simon Akuei Deng, Commissioner General of the National Revenue Authority, called for a comprehensive review of the country’s taxation system. He highlighted the need for updated and harmonized tax laws to streamline revenue collection and improve clarity across national, state, and local governments.
“We need to review our Taxation Act of 2009. We need to revise the Customs Act and introduce a new law—the Tax Harmonization Act,” said Akuei. “This law will clearly define the roles and responsibilities of national, state, and local governments in tax collection.”
The forum continues through April 25 and includes panel discussions, breakout sessions, and networking opportunities aimed at strengthening the role of the private sector in driving South Sudan’s economic transformation.
