Despite mounting economic difficulties, growing inflation, and widespread hunger, South Sudanese in Bor have found ways to come together in faith to celebrate the birth of Christ this Christmas season.

At Saint Andrew’s Cathedral in Bor, about 5,000 faithful gathered to mark the birth of Jesus Christ, with many expressing gratitude for the gift of life amid economic hardship. For the people of Bor, this year’s Christmas celebrations were an act of resilience, as they find strength in their faith despite the ongoing challenges.

The economic situation in South Sudan is dire, with many government workers and members of the organized forces having gone without salaries for the past year. Inflation and the effects of ongoing conflict have left many families struggling to meet basic needs. However, despite these hardships, South Sudanese in Bor came together in unity, celebrating the season’s message of hope, peace, and perseverance.

Philip Maluak Deng, a local parishioner, shared his gratitude for life, saying, “We manage to celebrate this Christmas festival despite the economic challenges. We hope that South Sudan will not be the same again in 2025 and that the government will prioritize the wellbeing of its people.”

Grace Bol Makuei echoed these sentiments, saying, “Even when we are hungry, we are still happy because God has given us life and happiness. Christmas reminds us that hope is never lost, and we look forward to a prosperous New Year.”

In his Christmas sermon, Bishop Reuben Akurdid Ngong of the Episcopal Church of South Sudan commended the faithful for their resilience. He acknowledged the difficult conditions but urged the people to remain steadfast in their faith and hope for a better future.

Governor Majoub Biel Turuk also spoke to the congregation, urging peace and unity. “Our country cannot progress unless we live in peace. Let’s forgive each other, promote peace, and work together for a better future,” he said.

Despite the many challenges facing South Sudan, the spirit of Christmas in Bor is one of hope, love, and community, as people continue to share what little they have and support each other in the face of adversity.
