Condolences are pouring in from across the country for the sudden passing of the former governor of the defunct Jonglei state, Maker Thiong Maal. Maker passed away on Wednesday morning at Juba’s Gudele Hospital, where he was admitted for blood pressure, as confirmed by family members and a government official.
Malual Gabriel Kon, the Jonglei State Peace Building Minister and acting governor, sent a heartfelt condolence message in a letter.
“The passing of Maker Thiong Maal is a great loss for Jonglei State and the entire nation. We will remember him for his dedication and service. In his honor, the Jonglei state flag will fly at half-mast for three days,” Kon stated.
The Paramount Chief of Bor County, Sultan Malaak Ayuen-Maweer, described Maker as a hero who played a crucial role in the liberation struggle for the independence of South Sudan.
“Maker Thiong Maal was a true patriot and a hero of our liberation. His contributions to our independence and his dedicated service in various capacities will never be forgotten. His legacy will continue to inspire future generations,” said Malaak.
Maker Thiong Maal served as the governor of the defunct Jonglei state in 2019 and was a Member of Parliament representing Bor county in the National Council of States. He also held positions in the old Sudan government. Maker’s exact age is yet to be confirmed, but he is believed to be in his 70s.
